Description

This Della Robbia ceramic plaque is hand made in Italy.
It measures 7,1/4" diameter and it has as subject the Madonna with child angels and dove (Holy Virgin of Boccadirio)
(B.V. is for Beata Vergine in Italian and that means Holy Virgin)
It has two holes on the top border to be hanged.
It can be placed outdoors in the garden or in the home for decoration (in Italy you actually see these pieces outdoors, cemented to the wall, as a benediction to the house, since people have them blessed).
The vibrant colors will not fade with time.

This lovely theme is from the original one by Andrea Della Robbia of the year 1505.
The topic is the representation of an event that is said to have occurred on July 16, 1480 in a little village (Boccadirio) in the mountains of central Italy. The story narrates that two young siblings (Donato and Cornelia Vangelisti), while herding their sheep, prayed for the Madonna to help them; suddenly the Madonna appeared to them as represented in the ceramic, ordering them to have a sanctuary constructed in the same spot where she appeared. Years later a magnificent church was built on this site and a beautiful ceramic representing this event was ordered to the workshop of Andrea Della Robbia. That original ceramic stands today on the main altar of that church.
